Double Handoff Counter and Tackle Trap

We continue our series of emails covering the most versatile blocking system in football. It was devised by Roger Holmes and Hall-of-Fame college coach Herschel Moore.

Holmes has won 240 games and played for 3 GA state championships, winning two, including 2019

This 17-course system is currently on sale for $167 on CoachTube.

We sent out an email on Friday covering the actual system and an email yesterday showing the 7 ways to block Buck Sweep.  The Buck Sweep course is only FIVE BUCKS on CoachTube.

Those emails can be found as blog articles by clicking here.

In case you missed it, here is a quick review of the blocking system.

This blocking system starts by assigning each lineman and back a letter to determine who pulls in the play call.  Combo blocks use the first letter to decide who kicks out and the second letter is for the man leading through the hole.

If the play Call involves the Letters: W, X, Y or Z the play side linemen will follow the “Post Lead Principals.”…..which involves the Man at the Called Hole and the two players to the outside of him.

The system’s MAN BLOCKING rules are used whenever the letter “M” is in the play call.

  • Center has 0
  • PSG has 1
  • PST has 2
  • TE has 3
  • Backside scoops

The Holmes/Moore blocking system uses colors to take a lineman off any of the rules discussed so far.  There are also COG, TUG, GUT, GUS, and TED calls that tell linemen to fold block a DL & LB.

Today we take a look at the 2 counter plays in the Wing T.

But before we begin, we need to review the blocking calls used on the Counter plays.

The double handoff Counter Criss Cross is a basic play in the Wing-T and should be a staple part of the offense.

  • Looks like the Power play
  • helps to slow the defense down on pursuit.
  • Takes advantage of backside defenders getting up field to contain the Bootleg.

The Tackle Trap play is the other counter play that is a staple of any Wing T offense

  • Comes off the Belly Fake
  • Slows down backside Linebackers from pursuing the Fullback on the Belly play

This email is going to only focus on one of these counter plays, the double handoff Counter Criss Cross.  Some key coaching point for the Quarterback on the Counter Criss Cross are:

  • We ask the QB to extend ball to HalfBack before he gets to the midline so the defense can see him take the ball.
  • The QB will carry out his Bootleg fake to hold the backside DE and Corner.
  • He can make a terrific block on some occasions.

The key coaching points for the halfback and the wingback on this play are:

  • The Halfback stays on his 4-yard landmark.
  •  the Wingback will go to him to receive the handoff.
  • Both backs receive the handoffs by placing their hands at their belt and taking ball into hands.
  • The Wingback running the ball must time his footwork and not go towards the Halfback until he sees the ball placed in the hands of the halfback

Holmes prefers to allow the FB to be the kick out blocker and pull the TE through the hole.

As with all his plays, Holmes has multiple blocking schemes.  Here are two of the seven variations
