Meet Coach Stewart

Coached football for 27 years, winning championships with 6th graders, 8th graders, high school freshman, and high school varsity.  He coached 9 years at the youth and freshman level, always serving as head coach, then 16 years at the varsity level, the past 12 as the varsity head coach.

Turnaround artist

As assistant coach, helped McFarland break a 19-game losing streak to go 8-2 and make playoffs for the 4th time in 75 year school history. After a 3-year hiatus, returned as head coach to a 1-19 McFarland program. Led them back into the playoffs in year two. McFarland had no weight room, 3 coaching stipends, 600 students in the school, and every student was in the free lunch program.

Coach moved on to 900 student Corcoran to break a 27-game losing streak with an undefeated league championship in Year 2.

The pinnacle of his career was Porterville, a school with 2,000 students in a rural, agricultural setting.  They had never won a playoff game in 100 years and had only won 8 games in the 5 years before his arrival.  He started a 501(c) booster club from scratch, formed 3 youth feeder teams, and completely re-built the dilapidated weight room with $40,000.

Porterville won 36 games in four years, won 6 playoff games, a league championship, and played for back-to-back section championships.

In 2018, Stewart traveled to Pennsylvania to coach a 6-24 program. They went 9-1, ranking 9th in the state in total offense.

Stewart has re-built all of these schools despite NEVER COACHING A SCHOLARSHIP PLAYER !!!  Also, he has only lost 2 players to grades in his entire career as his Academic Gameplan is a solid, year-round program.  But Stewart’s strength is Team Building…at all 4 levels: Players, Coaches, Campus, & Community.

Coach Stewart served 4 years in the USMC and has a bachelors in biology and minors in chemistry and physics.  In addition to teaching science, Stewart has also taught Advanced Strength and Conditioning.

SSX Exercise DVD

Close to 300 exercises cataloged into 10 groups.

SSX Power & Explosion

Shows how to slowly incorporate power into your strength workouts.What good is strength without power & explosion? They go hand in hand and as you get closer to spring ball, your athletes will have to be transitioned to a very explosive workout. The DVD talks about design considerations as to WHEN & HOW to introduce plyometrics, as well as the teaching progression. We will show you that it is so much more than jumping on & off boxes. There is also a 20 minute, detailed explanation of how to teach power clean, snatch, and squat. All the exercises for an 8-week, 5-day workout are laid out progressively at the end of the DVD.

SSX Speed, Agility, & Conditioning

Shows you how to improve all of your athletes in both linear & lateral speed, and proper ways to condition anaerobically.Straight sprinting speed does not transfer to change of direction speed. The DVD starts with the 1st phase of speed: quickness and then goes into the teaching progression of speed mechanics. Some of this is incorporated into the daily dynamic warmup, some of it is developed in the weight room, and the rest is done on non-lifting days in spring & summer. Conditioning is discussed and the old school of “running till they puke” is just that: OLD! We will show that an understanding of energy systems will lead to conditioning athletes in a much more efficient way. Conditioning helps maintain the speed you already have and decreases body fat…but to increase speed, you must train fast.

SSX Strength & Core

Covers every set, rep, & intensity to build strength and core over a 52- week program.The basic phases to building strength are explained in BASE, STRENGTH, and PEAK phases. There is progressive movement from building strong muscle mass to making that strength functional so that power & explosion can be maximized. Multi joint & unilateral movements are explained, along with greater incorporation of kettlebell exercises that can be done with dumbells. The importance of building the core is that it connects the upper body to the lower body and cannot be ignored. But the philosophy is simply not to do a bunch of crunches at the end of every workout, but to incorporate it into the workout through a combination of ground and upright based movements. After the powerpoint explanation, all the exercises are laid out in the order that they should be done in an 8-week, 4-day workout cycle. Also, over 40 core exercises are shown by Coach Stewart’s players.

SSX Warmup, Flexibility, & Nutrition

Covers 4 different Dynamic Warmups and post workout flexibility stretching.Shows when static stretching is effective, and it is NOT at the beginning of a workout. Their are 4 different dynamic warmups that are specific to Upper Body, Lower Body lifting days, as well as complex lifting days, and agility days. Also explains why a post workout flexibility routine is necessary and only takes 5 minutes. This DVD is the one that will decrease injuries and covers Prehab /Rehab workouts. There is a powerpoint that puts nutrition in easy to understand terms for a teenager.

SSX Year Round Planning & Design

Discussion of things to think about when designing a year round high school training program.–> Basic understanding of ATP energy systems, why less is more, know when to stop, and importance of recovery; –> Importance of variety –> Ability to calculate volume & intensity properly; –> Set & Rep guidelines; –> Organization on a daily basis (order of exercises) –> Maximize your time and proper interval training –> Multiple sport athletes and game day training
